Exercising safely in hot weather

Staying active when temperatures rise

Regular exercise is important for physical and mental wellbeing, but hot weather can place additional strain on the body.

Taking a few simple precautions can help you stay safe while remaining active.

Choose the coolest part of the day

Try exercising:

  • Early in the morning
  • Later in the evening
  • In shaded areas when possible

Avoiding the hottest part of the day can reduce the risk of heat-related illness.

Stay hydrated

Drink water before, during, and after exercise.

You may need more fluids than usual during warmer weather, especially if you're exercising for longer periods.

Adjust your expectations

Hot weather can make exercise feel harder.

It's perfectly reasonable to:

  • Slow your pace
  • Reduce intensity
  • Take more breaks
  • Shorten your workout

Listening to your body is important.

Know when to stop

If you experience:

  • Dizziness
  • Nausea
  • Excessive fatigue
  • Headaches

Stop exercising and seek a cooler environment.
