Supporting Performance at the ATW Colchester Friday Night Runs
Last Friday, the wellbeingthatworks team were proud to support the ATW Colchester Friday Night Runs at Colchester Sports Park. The event has earned a reputation as one of the region’s premier 5K race evenings, incorporating the Essex 5K County Championships and culminating in dedicated elite races for some exceptionally fast athletes. It was clear from the moment we arrived that this wasn’t just another race night. It was an event built around performance, preparation and the pursuit of personal excellence.
Throughout the evening, we provided sports massage support to runners before and after their races. It gave us the chance to meet a fantastic range of athletes, from experienced club runners and endurance competitors to those chasing an important personal best or key milestone in their training season.
What stood out?
It wasn’t simply the speed on display. It was the dedication behind it. Every runner we spoke to had a goal. Some were targeting championship positions. Others were aiming for a long-awaited PB on a course specifically designed for fast times. For many, months of consistent training had led to this one evening. The focus, commitment and professionalism shown by so many of the athletes was genuinely impressive.
The atmosphere throughout the event was exceptional. Great music, fantastic support and a real sense of excitement around every race. Despite the high standard of competition, there was also a strong sense of community. Runners encouraged one another, celebrated each other’s success and shared stories of training, setbacks and achievements.
Good news stories:
We heard some brilliant stories over the course of the evening. There were runners returning from injury after months away from racing. Athletes balancing demanding careers, family life and ambitious training schedules. Ironman competitors using the event as part of a wider programme. Club runners pursuing championship success. Every story was different, but the common factor was determination and a commitment to improving. The best part? Many achieved exactly what they’d set out to do.
As physiotherapists, events like this reinforce something we discuss regularly with our patients. Success on race day is rarely about one perfect session. It’s built through consistency, sensible training, effective recovery and dealing with small issues before they become bigger problems.
Too often, runners try to push through persistent aches and pains, hoping they’ll disappear on their own. Sometimes they do. Often they don’t. Addressing movement restrictions, building strength and understanding how your body responds to training can make a huge difference to both performance and injury prevention – it’s something we deal with lots in both our Colchester and Ipswich clinics.
What part do we play?
At wellbeingthatworks, we’re passionate about helping runners stay healthy and continue doing what they love. Our physiotherapists have additional training in Running Repairs and Strength & Conditioning, helping runners improve efficiency, reduce injury risk and maximise performance over the long term. We provide evidence-based physiotherapy and rehabilitation designed around each individual’s goals, whether that’s completing a first 5K or competing at the highest level.
A huge congratulations to everyone who took part in Friday’s event. It was a privilege to be involved and support such an inspiring evening of racing.
If you’re managing a running injury, struggling with recurring niggles, or looking to improve your performance, we’d love to help.
