Menopause Explained: More Than Hot Flushes

Published On: 12 May 20261.3 min read

Menopause is about much more than hot flushes. Hormonal changes can affect joints, muscles, energy levels, mood, and pelvic health.

Common menopause symptoms

Menopause can cause:

  • Fatigue and poor sleep
  • Low mood, anxiety, or brain fog
  • Weight and body composition changes
  • Joint and muscle pain or stiffness
  • Pelvic health symptoms, such as bladder, bowel, or pelvic discomfort

Symptoms often begin during perimenopause and can vary widely.

The link between menopause and joint, muscle and bone pain

Changes in oestrogen can affect joint lubrication, muscles, connective tissue, and bone health, increasing the risk of aches, stiffness, and reduced recovery from activity.

Menopause and pelvic health

Hormonal changes can also affect the pelvic floor and surrounding tissues, leading to:

  • Bladder urgency or leakage
  • Pelvic or lower abdominal discomfort
  • Pain during exercise or movement
  • Bowel control changes
  • Pelvic pain linked with back or hip symptoms

These symptoms are common, but they are not something you have to manage alone.

How a Pelvic Health Assessment can help

A pelvic health assessment looks at how your pelvic floor, breathing, posture, and movement work together. It can:

  • Identify causes of pelvic, bladder, or bowel symptoms
  • Address pelvic floor weakness or tension
  • Link pelvic health issues with joint, muscle and bone pain
  • Support safe movement and exercise
  • Improve confidence and quality of life

If menopause symptoms are affecting your comfort, movement, or confidence, a pelvic health or physiotherapy assessment can help.
