Rest vs Movement: What’s Best for Joint Pain?
When joints hurt, it’s natural to rest. But for most joint pain, movement – not prolonged rest – is key to recovery.
When rest helps
Short‑term rest can be useful:
- After a new injury
- During sudden or severe flare‑ups
Resting for too long, however, can lead to stiffness, weakness, and increased pain.
Why movement matters
Gentle, regular movement:
- Keeps joints flexible
- Maintains muscle strength
- Reduces stiffness and sensitivity
- Supports long‑term joint health
Movement should be gradual and within comfort. Pain does not always mean damage.
If joint pain is affecting your confidence to move, a physiotherapy assessment can help you understand what activities are safe and how to build movement back into daily life.
